Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a synthetic polymer with versatile properties that make it an essential material in various industries. Known for its solubility in water, biocompatibility, and ability to form strong films, PVA has widespread applications in adhesives, packaging, textiles, and medical fields. During this process, acetyl groups (-COCH3) in PVAc are replaced by hydroxyl groups (-OH), resulting in a polymer with the repeating structure −CH2−CHOH−-CH2-CHOH-−CH2−CHOH−n. The degree of hydrolysis determines the polymer's physical and chemical properties. Fully hydrolyzed PVA is less soluble in water but more chemically resistant, whereas partially hydrolyzed PVA dissolves more readily in cold water.
